Regular Council Meeting November 19, 2024
This is expected to be a fairly quick meeting. I would bet that there is only one motion that might result in mixed support.
Agenda highlights
NE School Site Servicing($74m?)
This is a motion from a member of Council to direct admin to fast-track servicing for a high school in the new NE Area Structure Plan. Admin is recommending that we continue with the standard servicing process to ensure that stakeholders and the bigger picture is considered, which could result in a school site being shovel-ready by 2027. If we go ahead with a different plan, we’d be skipping steps that reduce our risk, including finalizing a cost-sharing agreement with relevant stakeholders, approval from the EMRB which is still pending, the Neighbourhood Structure Plan, etc. Also, the current site is far too small for a high school, so someone (the city?) would have to buy another ~6 acres of land at market value to make it the size the school board needs. I don’t know the cost of that much land. Regarding staff time, “this project would need to be prioritized over all other projects listed within the Council’s Strategic Plan” to make this proposal work.
This is a brief and incomplete overview of our meetings, with my personal comments sprinkled in - In no way are my opinions representative of the official direction of council or the City of St. Albert. Please let me know of any typos or errors. Members of the public can register to speak if they have information to present to council. Full agenda packages can be found on the stalbert.ca website.
