Last weeks + Org Meeting + Special Council Meeting October 22, 2024

Tuesday’s meeting will be my 8th Organizational Meeting since being elected in 2017, and will be my last. It’s been a privilege!

Last weeks highlights

Alberta Gerontology Association - Primary Care in Alberta: I’ve heard repeatedly from St. Albert residents that they are concerned about access to primary healthcare. I technically attended this on behalf of my day-job employer, but I wear many hats when I’m engaging with folks from the Ministry of Health, including as a Councillor and Homeland Housing board member. This event included an interesting presentation & question session with the ADM of Primary Care, Erin O’Neil.

Chamber of Commerce Luncheon: It’s always great to connect with local business owners at this event.

Fall Midsized Mayors dinner: It was great seeing mayors from across Alberta hosted at the Glasshouse Bistro. Thanks to Fortis for sponsoring the event & for sharing information about electricity demand in Alberta.

Org meeting highlights

This meeting establishes the plan for the next year:

  • No changes to the Council & Committee of the Whole schedule/meeting times.

  • The Deputy Mayor roster is being set; I’ll be DM in January & February.

  • Election Day is October 20 and the inaugural meeting is November 3. Best wishes to all the candidates!

  • Council appointments are pretty similar to this year. I’m being appointed back on the Emergency Management Advisory Committee, Inter-City Forum on Social Policy, Homeland Housing, and Youth Advisory Committee. I’m also an alternate for Edmonton Global and the Seniors Advisory Committee.

Special Council meeting (budget)

The CAO will be presenting the 2025-2027 Financial Plan & 2025 budget. As far as I can tell, the details of the plan are embargoed until after the presentation - I have a post ready to go to go over my thoughts once we’re allowed to comment.

This is a brief and incomplete overview of our meetings, with my personal comments sprinkled in - In no way are my opinions representative of the official direction of council or the City of St. Albert. Please let me know of any typos or errors. Members of the public can register to speak if they have information to present to council. Full agenda packages can be found on the stalbert.ca website.
